Cheapest Countries to Retire Early

Countries where Americans can reach financial independence with the least capital. Based on estimated single-person monthly expenses and the 4% withdrawal rule.

What Is a FIRE Number and Why Does It Change by Country?

Your FIRE number (the investment portfolio that funds your retirement) is not a fixed figure. It depends entirely on how much you spend each month. The 4% rule, drawn from decades of US stock market data, says you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually without depleting it over a 30-year retirement. That means your FIRE number is simply your annual expenses divided by 0.04, or your monthly expenses multiplied by 300.

The math explains why retiring abroad is so powerful for early retirement. In a median US city, Americans spend roughly $3,500 a month, which means they need $1,050,000 to retire. In Lisbon on $2,000 a month, that number drops to $600,000. In Chiang Mai on $1,100 a month, it falls to $330,000. The country you choose does not just affect your quality of life. It changes how long you have to work by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The numbers on this page use verified monthly budget estimates for single Americans living a comfortable (not budget backpacker) lifestyle in each country. Healthcare, housing, food, and transportation are included. What they don't include: US tax obligations, one-time relocation costs, or currency risk. Use these figures as a starting framework, not a contract. Click any country to see the full breakdown and calculate your personalized timeline.
